Students learn the concepts necessary for proficient reading and writing. They are introduced to the 175 most common spellings of the 44 sounds in English through a carefully crafted sequence that goes from simple to more complex. They learn and practise the Initial Code to mastery before starting on the Extended Code, and, soon after, the reading and writing of polysyllabic words.
Sounds-Write requires minimum planning, preparation, and expense to implement. Based on the latest research into cognitive load theory and the principles of direct instruction, the programme has been specially designed to accelerate learning—no matter the student’s level.
Above all, Sounds-Write enhances teachers’ knowledge of phonics, giving them the guidance, knowledge, and resources to teach children how to read and spell to the best of their abilities. England’s Department for Education has acknowledged the programme as having met all the criteria for exceptional phonics teaching, and it has been endorsed by the Department of Education in Western Australia as a high-quality phonics programme.

When students start at Oakfield Park School if we feel they may benefit from Phonics we will undertake a bespoke assessment to find out if it is suitable.
Phonics is taught daily throughout the school at 9:30am for students who it is appropriate for. Lessons are delivered as per the training by Sounds Write and is consistent throughout the school.
We currently have 7 teachers trained by Sounds Write and all staff have had internal CPD to support in the delivery of letter sounds and delivering sessions with students.
We use the Dandelion Readers which links to the Sounds Write Phonic Scheme. For more information on Dandelion Readers click here.
Not all students will benefit or be suitable to undertake the phonics sessions however at Oakfield Park school we still feel reading is important and we encourage all students to develop a love of books and reading.
Each class has a reading/story session weekly and are encouraged to visit the school and local library to read and share books together.
